Du Pengyu stuns Chen Long in Men’s Singles semi-finals of 2012 Yonex Denmark Open
It was an all-China semi-final in Yonex Denmark Open and the Men’s Singles expert Du Pengyu secured a berth in the title match after beating Chen Long on Saturday, October 20, 2012.
The young but talented Chinese campaigner played with great conviction and overwhelmed his experienced rival by registering winning figures of 21-14 and 21-10 after an exhausting exercise of 39 minutes.
World Number nine Du Pengyu established his grip over the game from very first stroke and maintained the upper hand until the last shot was played.
On the other hand, Chen Long failed to proceed despite of being one of the frontrunners in this Premier Super Series.
The opening game set overall tempo of the match as Du Pengyu showed great fighting spirit and bagged a valuable match point.
Initially, he looked a bit confused in front of the maestro Chen Long but then he showed a transformed character and struck hard when it mattered.
He struggled in the establishing rallies and remained at the lower end until half time. However, he still managed to stay close on the points table and finished first half of the set with a respectable score position of 10-11.
After the mid-game break, he employed unusual tactics and enthralled the opposing shuttler with a fine blend of power packed strokes and deceiving drop net shots.
Chen Long, who was second seeded player of this tournament, could not apply an effective counter-attack strategy and knelt down tamely.
First sign of trouble came when he allowed his challenger to pocket five consecutive points after 11-10 and then things became worse when scoreboard flashed 18-13 margin.
Chen Long could not come out of this deficit and surrendered after reading a decisive total of 14-21.
The second set of the match saw him putting a below par performance which ultimately led him to a woeful exit from the tournament.
Du Pengyu made best out of his competitor’s blunders and established an unassailable lead with 11-6 margin.
He did not drop this pace and sealed a straight-set victory with a staggering knock of 21-10. This win took him to the final round where he will be swinging arms against World Number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia.
