Du Pengyu trounces Marc Zwiebler in Men’s Singles round-of-16 at the Singapore Open Super Series
China’s emerging star, Du Pengyu, effortlessly thrashed Germany’s Marc Zwiebler, in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 at the Singapore Open Super Series 2011, in Singapore, on Thursday, June 16, 2011.
Pengyu faced no problem at all in beating the World Number 15, Zwiebler, in a straight-set fight which lasted for 45 minutes.
In the first game, both males were close in their speed and accuracy. The German scored many points by executing powerful smashes in the start of the match. However, Pengyu’s defence became stronger as the match progressed.
The Chinese, who is currently ranked at the Number 12 spot in the world rankings, lifted his level of play by becoming aggressive in the front court and employed many pushes and net strokes to destabilise his opponent from the base line. He successfully
built a good lead of 11-7 until the interval of the opening half.
After the break, the spirited Chinese continued his impressive play against Zwiebler, who became slow in the concluding phase of the match. The speed and accuracy of the Chinese shuttlers dashed the hopes of the German in the opening set. Pengyu took 25
minutes to win the set by a 21-16 margin.
In the second set of this Men’s Singles battle, Pengyu proved that he belongs to the elite class of badminton players, as he showcased a remarkable game. Zwiebler found himself completely helpless against the top-class play of the Chinese. The German hit
many hasty shots which went wide of the court, indicating his nervousness. Pengyu reached 11-6 in the first part of the set.
After the one-minute break, the German tried to catch up with the pace of game, but failed to tackle the accuracy of his challenger, who was not showing any sign of fatigue in the match. Pengyu took 20 minutes in the second set to oust his opponent by a
21-12 margin. The end result of this 45-mintue two-set contest was 21-16 and 21-12.
In the Men’s Singles quarter-final, Pengyu will fight against either Denmark’s Peter Hoeg Gade or England’s Rajiv Ouseph.
