Dual Citizenship in Ireland?

My mom just told me I have dual citizenship in America and Ireland. My Mom was born in Ireland and I got a grip of Family in Ireland and England.

I'm a American but I was thinking of moving over there. Is this possible? Do I really have dual citizenship?

  1. The same situation happened to me, but both parents were Irish.

Anyway, I was born in England, I was living in Ireland at the time, I just had to get a copy of my mums birth certificate and submit it with the usual passport details of the passport office.

As long as your parent has an Irish birth certificate and you can get hold of it you are entitled to citizenship. To Europe as well!

  2. Yes you're Irish. If you were born outside Ireland to an Irish citizen who was himself or herself born in Ireland, then you are an Irish citizen.

If you want dual citizenship you have to legally recognise it by getting a Irish passport. Just start downloading the forms and reading the info at the Irish embassy in the USA.

Any ONE of the below is considered proof of Irish citizenship:

    Your most recent Irish Passport

Your original Long Form Irish Birth Certificate (if passport has been lost/stolen or if this is your first application for an Irish passport)

Your own original Birth Certificate and the long-form Birth Certificate of your Irish-born parent and your parents' State Marriage Certificate if applicable, e.g. if your mother was born in Ireland and subsequently changed her name through marriage

Your original Certificate of Naturalisation for Ireland and your own original Birth Certificate

Your original Certificate of Foreign Births Registration for Ireland and your own original Birth Certificate

Your original Certificate of Post-Nuptial Irish Citizenship and your own original Birth Certificate.
