Dual Derby winner, Camelot, recovering fine after the colic surgery
Few could fathom that the hope of the 2012 Triple Crown will end in a surgery right after the race that followed the devastating defeat in the Group 1 St Leger. The last time before getting admitted he was seen finishing seventh in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc
de Triomphe on Sunday at Longchamp.
Wednesday had the dual derby winner admitted for the colic surgery. The term is used for a potential intestinal problem, but is not a bad news itself. It is a way in which horses show their abdominal pain, and the connections need to be extra vigilant in
order to get it treated as soon as possible.
Owners the Coolmore Stud, via Twitter, said: ‘Triple Classic winner Camelot was admitted to Fethard Veterinary Hospital this evening and underwent exploratory colic surgery. Obviously, it’s still very early days but a further bulletin will be issued in the
morning.’
Not an entire week after Camelot’s last race, he was taken in for medical examination. However, the good news for the connections and the curious crowds did not take long to flow in as it was tweeted:
A tweet from Coolmore read: "Camelot's colic surgery went well and he is doing great. The veterinary team are delighted with his progress to date."
The St Leger in September was originally to be the last outing of the Aidan O’Brien trained, but the plans were then stretched on to the Arc. Going unlucky initially, Montjeu’s bay colt out of, Tarfah, was at a loss of a credible jockey for the prestigious
French race, and once when he did fine one, he turned out to be the world class rider, Frankie Dettori.
His chances of landing the race were already high, and surged with the option of the incredible jockey. Things did not take a bright turn for the Coolmore stud that ended seventh in the race.
There are by now far too many indications that state that it is time for the three-year-old bay colt to rest.
The connections have not released any plans otherwise, and the colic surgery has to mark the end of the season for the Triple Crown contender.
His unbeaten record is now bruised by two failures, and he might just roll up the sleeves and get back to business the coming season.
