Question:

Dual citizenship- Minor in Canada, Adult in US?

I have a friend who lives in Canada, though they have dual citizenship. They'll be turning 18 in the next couple days, which means they'll be considered an adult here in the US state I live in, but they're still considered a minor in their province (19 is the age of majority there). Their home life is currently a nightmare, no thanks to unstable parent(s). If they were to come down here after they turn 18 with their dual citizenship, would they be able to stay without having to worry about their parent(s) taking legal action to bring them back up? Any help is appreciated; thank you.

  1. Yes, tell him to go for it.  Hope you don't find out that the problems weren't really down to his parents as so many teens do!  The only bummer will be not having automatic health insurance.

  2. 18 is a legal adult in Canada. It does not matter what province they live in 19 is the drinking age in some province.I think your friend is full of it.

  3. Yes. They have to enter the US with a US passport or show proof of US citizenship. Thereafter they are on US soil, are US citizens and must obey US laws which make the age of majority 18. If they returned to Canada they would have to follow Canadian law.
