Question:

Dual quad and three deuces ... again?

Following up to an earlier question (thanks to all who offered an answer). If the 409 ci was a V8, did each of the dual quads feed 4 cylinders? Was each barrel responsible for a single cylinder? How does that apply to the 389 ci V8 with its three deuces? 3 doesn't go into 8.

  1. The whole carb feeds the whole engine. Using the 389 for an example: The center carb is the only one directly connected to the accelerator. The end carbs are vacuum operated. As load on the engine increases, vacuum increases, causing the carbs to open. The entire airflow through the carb enters the intake plenum (the large open space in the intake manifold directly below the carburetor). It's then pulled into individual intake runners according to which cylinder is on its intake stroke. The carb venturis are not individually piped (?) to a cylinder.

Some engines have mechanical secondaries instead of vacuum, but the whole carb is still supplying the entire engine.
