Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby 2011 - Treasure Beach hands Aidan O’Brien six in a row, Carlton House fails
Going into the race there was massive speculation that the Queen owned, Carlton House, will break the curse of Aidan O’Brien over English trainers and win the Group One Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.
It wasn’t to be as Aidan O’Brien landed the Irish Derby yet again on 26 June, 2011.
Aidan O’Brien owned the Curragh once again for the sixth time on the trot and ninth time over all. He did it in style by capturing the first three positions in the Derby as Treasure Beach made a late run to go past Seville. Memphis Tennessee finished third.
As O’Brien celebrated his sixth straight at the Derby, jockey Colm O'Donoghue enjoyed his first win in the Irish Derby. Under Colm O’Donoghue, Treasure Beach ran the English Derby but only to finish second to Pour Moi by a head. But the pair came back in
emphatic style and from the mid-pack screamed past Seville to land the Irish Derby for the first time for Colm O’Donoghue.
$1million Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby had four O’Brien colts on the field to run the 1 mile 4 furlong distance. The son of Galileo, Treasure Beach had a good run prior to the Irish Derby, winning the Chester Vase and a second position in the Epsom Derby.
The next possible start for the three-year old bay colt could Be Grand Prix de Paris on July 14.
Carlton House looked out of breath and out of sorts, when a sharp run was needed he couldn’t produce it and finished fourth behind Aidan O’Brien’s trio.
Carlton House was unable to get on terms with them as Treasure Beach started out well and made his move up towards his pace makers to battle it out with them. Treasure Beach started late and let Seville and Memphis Tennessee loose to gather ground.
Meanwhile, Carlton House and Native Khan were matching strides and never really looked like threatening any of the horses in the lead. Native Khan finished seventh in the race.
After the disappointing performance in the Epsom Derby and now in the Irish Derby, trainer, Sir Michael Stout, has decided to put him back in short distance tracks and see if the sprint suits him.
Though it was Treasure Beach’s day, the other two Seville and Memphis Tennessee made a race out of it and battled it out among themselves.
Treasure Beach followed them from mid-pack and showed that he has a big engine, as he stream rolled his competition as well as his stable mates to grab it for the sixth consecutive time for the champion trainer Aidan O’Brien.
