Dubai Ladies Masters: Caroline Masson ramps up pressure on rivals after first round
German Caroline Masson made a quick charge in the first round of the ongoing Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, as the star golfer ramped up pressure on the back nine, shooting a 68.
Masson, who is taking the season-ending battle more seriously than any other contender, knew what it would mean to grab a spot inside the top five—and she pushed herself to the limit and bounced
back in the match on the last nine holes.
She got off to a somewhat sluggish start as all she could do on the first six holes was score a par. She, however, launched her first birdie on the difficult par-3 7th hole, gaining
some confidence.
To further dampen her spirits, Masson carded a bogey on the par-4 9th. However, she stepped up her scoring campaign on the back nine, as she rattled off four birdies and avoided
bogeys throughout the last nine holes.
Masson whipped up crowd excitement after she drained consecutive birdies on 12th and 13th hole, further strengthening her position on the leaderboard.
The German star is not in the four-day LET (Ladies European Tour) event for a victory, because she has had her eye more on the money title than anything else.
Masson is currently standing at the second position in the ISPS Handa Order of Merit, having earned 210,831.15 euro.
On the other hand, Spanish Carlota Ciganda is leading the money race, having snapped up a whopping 242,789.95 euro.
Despite this, Masson’s chances to win the money race are as bright as Ciganda’s are, because all it will take her to walk away with the coveted title is a third-place finish at the least.
As the match has stretched into its second day, it is becoming clearer that Masson can have a chance to win the money battle.
Ciganda started the round a bit slower than her archrival, as she posted a 70.
Czech Klara Spilkova amazed her fans on Wednesday as she carded an impressive 67 in the opening round. The Czech star showed a solid short game on most of the holes.
“I played really good.  I had five birdies and was very, very solid, so I'm so happy.  It was a good game,” she said while talking to the media at the end of the round on Wednesday.
