Dubai Ladies Masters: Felicity Johnson grabs second position in second round
English Felicity Johnson snapped up every scoring chance she got on the second day of Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2012, shooting a 67 to grab the solo second spot on Thursday.
Johnson amazed her fans and spectators at the Emirates Golf Club with her near-perfect strokes on the greens, but was still four shots behind the leader Shanshan Feng of China.
Feng remained as resilient on Thursday as she was at the start of the four-day tournament, posting a 65 to further tighten her grip on the match.
Coming from behind, Johnson has cemented her position but she will have to keep a close eye on nearest rivals such as Gwladys Nocera and Caroline Masson who shared the third.
Masson and Nocera and two other contenders posted an overall 136 to share the third position at the end of the second day. But the picture is set to get even clearer as the match stretches
into its third day.
The English golfer started the round on Thursday with an aim to catch Feng. She parred the first two holes and fired a birdie on the par-5 third. Faltering on the 5th hole, she
had to suffer a bogey.
However, Johnson was quick to regain momentum as she shot her second birdie on the difficult par-3 7th.
On the back nine, Johnson switched to an aggressive mode, reeling off five birdies. She launched two straight birdies on the 10th and 11th hole, which further cemented
her position on the leaderboard
Speaking to the media at the end of the round, the LET (Ladies European Tour) star said that she was happy with her second-round performance but pointed out she did not have to make extra
efforts.
“It was a straightforward round,” said a confident Johnson who displayed a below-average performance in 2011 Dubai Masters, finishing 97th.
Johnson went on to say that her short game was exceptionally well throughout the day. “I struck the ball again and hit a lot of greens. I managed to create many good opportunities, which was
great. So far I am very happy with my work”.
Feng, who is playing her first-ever Dubai Masters, appears to have gained the upper hand and is set to further cement her position in the third and fourth round.
