Dubai Masters: Carlota Ciganda struggles to chase confident Masson after second round
With Caroline Masson coming on strong in the ongoing Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, Spanish Carlota Ciganda appeared under intense pressure despite shooting a 68 in the second round.
Ciganda is battling for the 2012 money title against Caroline Masson of Germany who is standing at the second position in the ISPS Handa Order of Merit 2012.
With the two rounds completed, Masson appears to have gained the upper hand over Ciganda.
Ciganda got off to a slower start as she posted a 70 in the first round on Wednesday. On the other hand, Masson was quick to capitalise on the favourable course conditions, making a much faster
start by carding a 68.
Ciganda improved her score on Thursday compared with the first day, but still needed to speed up her campaign in order to hamper the German from overtaking her on the money list.
The Spanish star started the second round with a clear head, shooting birdie on the first hole. She then parred the next hole and launched another birdie on the par-5 third.
Although she struggled to move up all day, avoiding a bogey in the round gave her renewed confidence.
On the back nine, Ciganda managed to fire her fourth birdie, brining her score to a 68.
“I played good today. I made no bogeys. I started with a birdie on the 10th hole, which was my first one. And then I made all pars until my 10th hole, and I also birdied the third hole
which is the par 5, 12 for me,” said the money leader who can pick up two titles if she also becomes the Rookie of the Year.
“I was 3‑under and then I was just making pars, hitting good shots and good chances for birdie. But the second nine holes, it was more windy”.
The LET giant is standing firm at the number one position in the ISPS Handa Order of Merit, with an eye-popping 242,789.95 euro in her pocket.
However, all Masson needs to do in order to win the race is earn 31,958.80 euro, which can be possible if she manages to finish inside the top three.
