Dubai Masters: Schreefel fires record 63 in third round, leader Feng still unfazed
Dutch Dewi Claire Schreefel posted a record 63 in the third round of ongoing Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, but she was still five strokes behind the leader Shanshan Feng at the end of the day on Friday.
Feng has stood firm at the first spot on the leaderboard since the first round, but she has further cemented her lead by shooting a 67 on the third day at the Emirates Golf Club, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Despite Feng clinging to the top spot, Schreefel rattled all the star performers for a moment as she was quick to capitalise on the favourable weather conditions in the third round.
Getting off to a neat start, the Dutch star carded a 69 in the first round, but failed to threaten the top-ranked contenders. The second round saw her lose momentum a little because she missed several chances on the greens, posting a 71.
Schreefel whipped up crowd excitement on Friday, carding nine birdies and no bogeys.
On the back nine, the LET (Ladies European Tour) star let her fans see another magical performance as she rattled off four straight birdies on 15th to 18th hole.
“I played really solid, tee-to-green and it my best round ever. Obviously, I am delighted with my efforts,” Schreefel, who turned professional in 2008,” said a confident Dutch while speaking to the media at the end of the round on Friday.
She went on to say that her game was solid on the greens, but more importantly, she did not have to rely too much on putting because she played the fairways well enough.
“I hit a few more greens and made the up-and-downs that I needed to. I only had 26 putts which was good,” said Schreefel whose 63 has helped her beat Louise Stahle of Sweden who had shot a tournament record 64 in the 2007 edition.
Commentators said that the pressure piled by Feng is still intense because even after Schreefel posting a gigantic 63, the Chinese golfer stands unhurt. They further said that the final round is likely to see an even stronger Feng eager to steer clear of resistance till the last hole.
