Dubai World Golf Championship 2010: First 2-Days Recap
The first two days of 2010 Dubai World Championship have been a disappointment for the fans of Graeme Mc Dowell. The Irish has been showing terrible performance ever since the start and chances are that he will decline whilst moving towards the final round.
As for the rest of the field, here is a quick recap of the two-day session:
The tournament kicked off on 25th November 2010 at the Jumeirah Golf Estate. The field was divided in the pairs of two; therefore, Graeme Mc Dowell was paired up with Martin Kaymer. Both the veterans were competing for the world number one title and signs
of stress were evident from their faces. Kaymer compiled a round of 69 and seized the third spot on the leader board, whereas, Graeme McDowell hardly made it to the par.
Robert Karlsson took the lead on the first day with Noh Seung-Yul chasing behind. Karlsson demonstrated an astonishing iron play in the back nine and rose into lead with the help of seven birdies. The 41-year-old made the lowest score of
the round and pushed rest of the field in lower spots. The leader was followed by the teenager from South Korea, Noh Seung-Yul, who stopped at 66.
The 41-year-old was thrilled with his play and took a bow on his way to the clubhouse. When press inquired the secret behind his perfect swings, he replied, “I think it's one of those courses, when you're playing well, it's easy to get close to the pins
because they sort of feed to the pins very often, but if you're off the sort of bowls of the pins, it's very difficult to set yourself. Therefore, I think that is why my score today was a bit like that. Made a lot of good stuff and when I missed it, it was
difficult to save myself."
Most of the field faltered on first day. The worst score was drawn by Jamie Donaldson and Retief Goosen who are 42nd and 24th on the Race to Dubai rankings respectively. Thirty-two players managed to remain in the realms of par and
only Ian Poulter remained safe from bogeys.
The sole hole-in-one was delivered by Charl Schwartzel. The South African amazed the crowd by holing the par-3 with a powerful drive.
On the second day, Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher took the charge after scoring nine-under-par. Meanwhile, the first round leaders could not keep up with their pace. Robert Karlsson carved a 75, whereas, Noh Seung-Yul surrendered at a 73.
Martin Kaymer followed the footsteps of his leaders and settled at 70 after giving a terrible performance. On the other hand, his competitor, Graeme Mc Dowell could not do any better and dropped four strokes to compile a score of 73.
The Irish failed to comprehend the course and was frustrated. Speaking to the press, he said, "I was just very quick to lose patience with myself. I do not think I have a huge amount in the tank and I am finding it tough to scramble. There
are enough good shots in there to give myself a chance, but I am getting frustrated very quickly.”
Unlike Kaymer and Mc Dowell, many players improved their game from the previous day. Jamie Donaldson gathered himself up, smashed six birdies and earned a scorecard worth of appreciation. Similar improvement was witnessed from the conqueror
of Old Course, Louis Oosthuizen. The South African matched the score that of Ian Poulter and surged up the leader board at the ninth place.
