Dubai is the most advanced city in the world?

true, their making the highest skycraper, 3 times the height of the empire state building. they made islands the shape of an atlas. their making the worlds first underwater hotel. They have the highest hotel, which is also the only 7 star hotel. They have incredible architecture.

NOT the first underwater hotel. There was one off the coast of Florida in the 60's. I seem to remember its still there and still water tight.

Having said that one has to be impressed by what the combination of wealth and power can achieve when its concentrated in the hands of a few people. The islands are truly amazing as is the Venice-like area they built. Isn't the world largest indoor ski slope there too?

Now, I understand they are planning ahead for the end-of-oil, but wont all this high tech, high roller stuff be completely useless when the oil runs out? I mean the world's millionaires (Dubai's target audience) are going to want a LOT of air-con in Dubai's climate. So where's the power coming from? I've not seen 400 sq kilometer solar cell power stations built there yet.

Does that make it the most advanced?  Yes, it's a fabulous place, but close to slave labor is used to build all those buildings, and there are few safety rules and NO unions.  That isn't advanced to me.  And the UAE national females have to wear an abayah and often full covering all the time out of doors.  

Let's say it's interesting and opulent.  I'd rather see them give some of that up for more fairness, frankly.  PS I've been there.

The ability to build flashy structures doesn't make Dubai 'most advanced.' I'd consider a nation that would spend some of their wealth on helping poorer countries much more 'advanced.' I mean an underwater hotel? It's like a hideout for a James Bond villian.

But in social terms...
