Dubai trying to bring Tiger Woods to Abu Dhabi Golf Championship
Officials of Abu Dhabi Golf Championship are looking to bring Tiger Woods to the event that will hit the European Tour next season. The tournament will take place at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, which is known as the most prestigious
golfing facility in Middle East.
The news regarding the potential deal was disclosed by the general manager of Abu Dhabi Golf Club (ADGC) Ken Kosak in an interview with Middle East Golfer magazine.
Kosak said in an interview to the magazine, “I think there is a strong possibility you will see Tiger. Our championship could benefit from Tiger and Tiger could benefit from the championship. Bringing Tiger here is an opportunity.
We would love to see him play in Abu Dhabi.”
Woods had a strong affiliation with Abu Dhabi until his project of constructing a golf resort was cancelled by Dubai’s Jumeirah Golf Estates, owing to the recession in the economy. The veteran pulled out of all possible projects,
but despite that Kosak is confident that Woods will agree to the offer.
He said that the officials were in talks with the 14-major winner and they were confident that the veteran would find the offer attractive.
Apart from this, Kosak disclosed that Dubai’s Jumeirah Golf Estates was also thinking of extending the contract with the European Tour for the Race to Dubai season-ending tournament. According to Kosak, the contract between the two
parties was about to expire in November, but both were involved in a deal that would reassure Abu Dhabi Golf Championship’s occurrence in the same region.
Kosak added, “A Race to Abu Dhabi is not necessarily something we are particularly looking at. I would not totally rule it out as a possibility though. I know the Tour would love to continue to stay in the region.”
In the same interview, Kosak added that the tour was thinking of changing the venue for the next season. According to him, Abu Dhabi Golf Championship would shift to Saadiyat Golf Beach Club or Yas Links in 2013.
