Dubawi Heights wins Gamely Stakes by a collar
“Everything we’ve asked, she’s really come well for us, this filly. She’s really improved and progressed each time”, echoed the victorious 28-year old trainer, Simon Callaghan, after his filly, Dubawi Heights, won the Gamely Stakes.
The 45th running of the Gamely Stakes took place on May 30, 2011
It was the first time Dubawi Heights made her way to the gates of a Grade 1 race but it was her fourth consecutive victory at Hollywood Park.
She defeated pacesetter, Celtic Princess, in a final time of 1 minute and 47.29 seconds. Her victory over turf enhanced the young trainer’s faith that the filly is meant to perform superbly on turf.
Callaghan wants to give Dubawi Heights another shot on turf, and he may enter her in the Beverly Stakes.
Beverly Stakes is a Grade 1 race, which takes place over a distance of 1 3/16 miles (9.5 furlongs). Beverly Stakes is the fillies’ counterpart to the Arlington Million, where only three-year old and above fillies race.
Dubawi Heights managed to give Callaghan his first ever Grade 1 race win. The trainer expressed his joy by saying “Getting a Grade 1 victory means everything”.
A brief recap of the race would illustrate that the 2008 Brazilian Horse of the year, Celtic Princess, lived up to her reputation by maintaining the lead almost throughout the race. In the final furlong, Celtic Princess got robbed of victory, as jockey,
Joel Rosario, guided Dubawi Heights to a win by a collar.
Celtic Princess was making her career debut for trainer A.C Avila.
Dubawi Heights had odds of 9-2 to win the race. Now she has won all of her four starts after Callaghan teamed her up with Rosario. With this win ($250,000) she has improved her total earnings to $655,196.
Never getting to win in England, Dubawi Heights broke her maiden on April 30, 2011 in the Grade 3 Wilshire Handicap. She was a maiden when she arrived in United States. Her failure in England can be attributed to the fact that she was raced too frequently
at the age of 2. The best she managed to attain in England was second positions.
The filly was a maiden when she arrived in United States. She won for the first time in November 28, 2010 at Hollywood Park, when her career mark was 0 for 8. She can now easily qualify as the best turf horse on the West Coast.
Dubawi Heights was bred in England and is owned in partnership by Simon’s father Neville Callaghan, Clodagh McStay, M.V. Magnier, and Annabel Wyatt. Neville Callaghan worked at the Rathmoy Stables.
Rathmoy Stables is an established training ground in England. Neville Callaghan has an established repute among trainers, as he has trained some of the finest horses such as Danehill Dancer, Magistretti, and, Hazy View.
Dubawi Heights was bred by Aston Mullins Stud. Her mother comes from a family of victors. Her dam Rosie Posy is half sister to Group 3 stakes winner, Bay Tree.
She also shares lineage with English highweight older sprint mare, Tante Rose, who won the 2004, Haydock Sprint Cup (England–Grade 1) over males.
