  1. August will be a very expensive time in Dublin for accomodation as it's a holiday here too. If you do want to stay in the city your best bet is to book now & you may get a special offer - otherwise you'll pay upwards of €90 per night for a very average hotel. You could stay in a hostel though - there a quite a few to accomodate backpackers in the city. The one advantage of staying IN the city is that you won't ever have to pay for a taxi as it's so small. They can be quite expensive too so check that out before you book anywhere outside.

The best place to stay for a good nightlife is Temple Bar but if you want to "meet the locals" forget it - Temple Bar is the tourist hub of the city. For a more Irish experience I would agree with the Galway suggestions, it's a student town but also a popular holiday town for Irish people so won't be quiet at all in August!

Whatever you choose to do I hope you enjoy your visit & don't forget your raingear, August or not!

In answer to Sam L re the 3 euro drinks - a new law will pass soon banning any sort of cut price alcohol sales so that's that :-(

  2. Dublin is very expensive, and the nightlife is better in Galway - well, I think so anyway.

  3. I found Galway pretty expensive... There's loads of clubs in dublin with 3 euro drinks...

  4. Dublin is a great choice for a short break as the airfare is not to bad and the journey is only about 1 hr.  You can even drive if you choose.

My favorite thing to do in dublin was the guiness tour.  I liked the tour bus as well. You could jump on and of as often during the day as you wanted and this helped me as I was not that fit and had my baby twins to lug around.

I decided just to go for the day as the accomadation was really expensive but once there realised I could have done a cheap bed and breakfast or a hostel for around £30 which was not to bad at all.

Have a brilliant break...but wrap up well as it can be really cold.

  5. The best nightlife is around the Temple bar area which is in the City Centre, there's loads of good bars in Dublin though and things are in walking distance.  It's expensive enough for accomodation alright, but you may get a good deal in one of the hotels.

    Look at this link:

Templ Bar is just south of the River Liffey and to the left of Trinity College on the map.

If you stay anywhere around that area you're in walking distance to all the cool clubs and bars.

  6. Hi, I love Dublin i have been 3 times in the past year, and am planning my next visit.  Have a look on Hotel Finders Dublin, they have some good offers. I wouldn't go to the cheap hostels though. I have stayed in Wynn's Hotel, (very central just off O'Connell St) and i have stayed in an apartment which is serviced by Browns Hotel, the apartment was good, but very quiet on a night you can get an apartment overlooking the River Liffey (they look lovely), they are not connected to the apartment i stayed in.  O'Connell St, is central to everywhere in the city, we got an Airlink bus from the airport 10 euros each return. Henry St (just off O'Connell St next to the post office) is fantastic for shopping as is Cleary's department store.  Take a tour bus around 14 euros each, hop on hop off bus all day, they take you to all the main tourist attractions. Guinness Factory is well worth a visit there is a 360degree view of the city at the top. Start looking on Ryanair website for good flights, i only paid £20 return. Some restaurants do great deals you will be able to get a nice meal for around 12 euros,  You will have a fantastic time.
