If 1 out of 3,500 males is affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, approximately how many females (in the same populatuion) are affected?

It is really difficult to find statistics for females for this disease.

  1. In general, males are only afflicted, though females can be carriers. The disorder is caused by a recessive mutation in the gene DMD, located in humans on the X chromosome


  2. Duchennes muscular dystrophy is very rare in females, and estimates indicates about 1 in 50,000,000 female.

    We think that for females to get this x-linked genetic disease you have to have an inactivated X chromosome, or mutations in both X chromosomes (at locus Xp21)
