How many ducks do you think it would take to clean up the duckweed in a 1 acre pond? And what are the best kind of ducks to use?

  1. White ducks or domesticated Mallard are the best, probably a dozen or so for a one acre pond.  However, using ducks to clear up duckweed causes a whole new set of problems for the pond. Their excrement around and in the water is then another major problem to address. Many soil and water conservation sites recommend wind as the best natural inhibitor of duckweed in ponds-the wind blows duckweed to the edges where drying and sun kills it.  Cutting trees that block wind, or shade the water are suggested if possible. Aerating the water can help also. I have a one acre pond about 10 year old with no duckweed. I have Amurs living in the pond that help keep vegetation down, no trees near the water, and full wind. About a dozen wild geese and ducks decided to move in permanently last year, and while they are interesting to watch, they are a mess.

  2. I'm not sure about using duck to clean duckweed. But if it is, 20 to 50 ducks will do. I do not know the name of the species of duck. But I suggest local duck which farmer rear for eggs can do. For better answer (may be) why not surf the agricultural website.
