Dudi Sela defeats Frederico Gil in the opening round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
World number 84, Dudi Sela of Israel, finally registered a victory in the opening round of the Wimbledon Championships on Monday afternoon, when he defeated the 91st ranked Portuguese player, Frederico Gil.
26-year-old Sela took one hour and fifty two minutes to conclude a comprehensive straight sets victory over the bleak Portuguese rival, settling the final scores at 6-4, 6-1, 6-4, to move onto the second round of the Grand Slam
tournament.
The contest was held on the grass court of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, where Sela had no trouble in hunting down Gil in straight sets. It was only the third victory the Israeli has
achieved in singles matchups in current ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season, while suffering six defeats.
Sela appeared in absolute control of the game and orchestrated most of the rallies in the contest to come out as the winner. He coughed 25 unforced errors in the matchup, while his opponent went past him with 32 costly mistakes,
assisting the Israeli to victory.
The contest appeared pretty one-sided all the way, with sheer dominance form Sela, who outplayed Gil in every segment of the game. The Israeli secured 40 winners in the game and the Portuguese followed him with 23 to finish on
the losing end.
The opener took off with an early exchange of serve breaks from both contestants and some assertive winners down the line. Gil was soon found in a terrible condition when Sela struck his second serve break to reach set point and
then went on to seal the opener at 6-4 to get one up in the contest.
Things exacerbated in the following set for the Portuguese, as he slumped further with his errant stroke play. Sela launched a series of attacking moves upon his bleak opponent and stung two serve breaks, while cracking 15 winners
to close the second set in an authoritative manner at 6-1 to inch closer to victory.
Sela carried on with his winning momentum and kept exerting immense pressure upon Gil, who started to crumble under the stress of defeat. 13 unforced errors from the Portuguese and one serve break from Sela proved sufficient for
him to conclude victory for him at 6-4, giving him an access to the second round of the mega event.
The Israeli will square off against the winner of the all-French clash between Edouard Roger-Vesselin and the 15th seed Gills Simon in the second round draws.
