why I can't lie on my back anymore? (on hard surfaces)

It's not because I can't breathe.. But it hurts really bad...

I went to the doctor last wk and I was in so much pain when I laid back so she could hear the heartbeat of my baby.. And it felt even WORSE when she placed the stethoscope (fetal doppler) on my tummy.. Lots of sharp stabbing pains by pelvis and where she placed the Doppler.. Can anyone tell me why..?

Please & thank you

Ps: they were not contractions/BHs

I will ask my doctor when I go back next week but I'm really curious:)

  1. The baby is big and is putting pressure on your internal organs. When you lie on your back, it intensifies.

  2. The weight of the baby is pressing on a large vein (vena cava I think) which is causing the pain.

It's normal to feel this when you get bigger.

  3. Well I had this problem too but it was because I had trigger points in my back, alot of doctors don't even know what trigger points are but I'm lucky my doc keeps up with everything in the medical community! When I laid back at his office when I was telling him about it, I almost jumped off the table from the stabbing pain. Ask your doc about trigger points and see what she says

  4. It's because you were putting pressure on your sciatic nerve.  You really shouldn't lay on your back past the 1st trimester anyway.  You should always try to lay on your side (specifically your left side) if you can.

  5. All the weight of your uterus rests on your back, your intestines, and your two major blood vessels can create backaches, aggravate hemorrhoids and make breathing more difficult.  During pregnancy you gain upwards of 20 pounds (sometimes more) which is mostly fluid, the placenta and ultimately the baby.  That kind of weight on your back is probably the cause of your severe back pain.  Try laying curled up or stretched out on your left side.

  6. It has to do with the baby pressing on a large vein in your back. When that happens, it decreases blood flow to you and the baby. Maybe that's why it was hurting so bad. Try to avoid laying on your back as much as possible.

    Best of luck to you!!
