Due to the recent economy what is a good idea for a small home based business to start? Also, how prosperous are mobile car washing businesses?

Yes mobile car washing is a good idea, there are a lot of things u have to consider before going into the business, even though its mobile you still have to be as well equiped as a car wash that has a physical location, some clients might require u to bring ur own water to wash their cars, or they might ask u questions regarding the use of their water facility in order to get discounts on the wash.It could be prosperous but only to an extent if you plan on having employees who will go to clients and offer ur services.

There are a lot of things to consider before going into the mobile carwash business, (1) It only thrives in affluent hoods, It is very difficult to gather clientele, They sometimes require that u have insurance that will cover any damages to their cars, they are mostly luxury cars.You have to be a patient person most importantly because most of your clients will require u to suck up to them because this is what makes them feel good about themselves, and most importantly because you go them offering your services it does not mean they are willing or they will be willing to paymore for ur service.
