Duffy Waldorf finishes second at the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn
Duffy Waldorf fired a six-under par 66, the best score of the day, in the final round of the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn. Still he failed to match Fred Funk’s tournament score of a 15-under par 201 and finished second on the leaderboard.
The Champions Tour event was being played at the Rock Barn G&S in Conover, North Carolina.
Waldorf started off his final round campaign four strokes behind Funk and made a strong charge on the leaderboard early in the day.
He birdied four of the first seven holes that he played and joined Funk on the top. In the meantime, Funk was having troubles in draining birdies, as he remained birdie-free for the first 11 holes.
Waldorf, on the other hand, was having a great time with his putter, which helped him take the outright lead on the 11th hole by recording the fifth birdie of the day.
Funk then realized that it was essential for him to record some birdies on the remaining holes in order to record a victory.
Therefore, he decided to use an offensive approach on the last seven holes. A birdie on the 12th hole took him back on the top position, sharing it with Waldorf.
Waldorf then added another shot to his scorecard on the 14th hole, which was again matched by Funk. On the 18th green, Waldorf missed a birdie chance.
He tipped the ball for a par and finished with a 14-under par overall score. Meanwhile, Funk’s approach shot stopped just two feet away from the hole, allowing him to finish the tournament with a birdie.
At the end of the day, Waldorf was a bit disappointed about missing the chance of a victory, despite playing amazingly well throughout the three rounds in North Carolina.
"I had two great days of putting, and that made the difference," said Waldorf, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, who became eligible to play the 50-and-over tour in August.
"That really got me going. I would've liked to have hit the ball closer a few more times, because I was rolling in the putts”.
