In the British Royal family you have the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duke of York and so forth what do these cities get from the Royal Family. Do those cities get money? How do these titles work or are these titles just symbolic.

  1. There is a pool of place-names which have historically been used for royal titles, and get re-used when a new title is needed. If William marries while his grandmother is still queen he would possibly be made duke of one of these places (Cumberland, Cambridge, Sussex), as will Harry. Prince Edward raised some eyebrows by choosing Wessex, which no longer exists as a county. The dukedom of York is usually held by a second son. These cities don't get any money for it, and the duke of X usually doesn't even live in X. It's misleading to think that there is an exact correlation between the Duchy of Cornwall and the county of Cornwall. Prince Charles's lands are scattered across England (the Oval cricket ground in south London is on duchy land).

  2. They are a load of rubbish.

  3. A Duke is a nobleman with the highest hereditary rank, especially a man of the highest grade of the peerage in Great Britain. A prince is usually a male heir of the monarch and the title "Duke" is granted by the monarch, which gives the Prince the power and authority to rule in an independent territory within the monarch’s realm. For example, a monarch rules the entire Great Britain, and each one of his sons will rule as an independent “sovereign” within their granted territory. However, in modern times, the title "Duke" is only a symbolic title nowadays. Historically, these dukes would have been the "sovereign" and had power and authority over these territories. They would control all its finances through local farming and businesses where a portion of taxes will flow into their own pockets.

  4. No these are titles relating to the piece of land they hold or held sway over today or in times gone by.

Since William of Normandy invaded in 1066 and the 'feudal system' came into play Britain has been divided up and given to noble men to govern and make money off the land. I live in the former lands of the Earl of Durham, i don't live far away from an estate he currently owns to this day as well.

  5. These titles are mostly symbolic, cities do not get money for a title. In the days of yore, a title came with land and the opportunity to make money through farming and other enterprises. These money-making titles are the older hereditary titles;today's newer titles are just courtesy titles with no estate attached.

The Duke of Edinburgh and the Duke of York don't hold the money-generating estates that the Duke of Cornwall(Prince Charles) holds. The Prince of Wales is an example of a duke who has a money-making duchy. His lands in the Duchy of Cornwall generate income through farming and organic foods, teas,et cetera.
