Dulko/Suarez crashed out by Auroux/Irigoyen in the opening round - XX Copa BBVA Colsanitas 2012
Wild card entrants, Gisela Dulko and Paola Suarez, were ousted by Mailen Auroux and Maria Irigoyen in an all-Argentinean clash at the XX Copa BBVA Colsanitas 2012 on Wednesday. They suffered a 4-6, 4-6 shock against their fellow citizens in the opening round
at this WTA International event held on the clay courts in Bogota, Colombia.
The high flying duo of Dulko and Suarez were not at their best at the Club Campestre El Rancho and after displaying dismal co-ordination, they eventually exited from the tournament. Suarez made a comeback after four and a half years of retirement and it
was evident in the match. She held both of her service games in the opening set but was broke in all of her service games in the following set.
Dulko and Suarez assertively entered the Colombian clay courts and held their serve in the second game to tie the scores at 1-1. The tandem then held remaining serves until they lost their concentration in the last game, eventually registering a 4-6 defeat.
The veteran duo redeployed their strategy in the following set and got the desiderated break in the opening game. However, they lost their serve twice and went 4-2 down. Dulko and Suarez sought the track again by recovering in the seventh game but after
suffering another blow in the tenth game, they suffered a 4-6 loss.
"Obviously it's disappointing to lose but we came to Bogotá to get the rhythm for Paola, who has not played in a long time," the 27-year-old Dulko commented after the match. "I think it was a good match. Our opponents played very well today."
"It has been almost five years since I last played, so I just went out there to play without too many expectations," Suarez added. "We did a lot of things well today but there are a lot of things to work on. We can only get better now."
The wild card entrants are the only two stars from South America to secure the top WTA rankings in doubles. The 35-year-old spent 87 weeks and conquered eight Grand Slam titles while Dulko stayed at the top rank for 24 weeks and has one Grand Slam title.
The winning Argentineans on the other hand advanced into the second round where they will face the top seeded duo of Eva Birnerova and Alexandra Panova. The highest ranked team crushed the wild card entrants, Karen Castiblanco and Paula Ormaechea, with a
bagel to set-up this encounter.
