Dullahan and Union Rags look good for the Belmont Stakes
The Belmont Stakes hopefuls, who worked on 3 June, 2012, have all come out their works in good order, and among them was Dullahan, Paynter, Atigun, Unstoppable U, and Street Life, and they all came out on the track the morning after – all walked. But the
Michael Matz trained starlet, Union Rags is still not at Belmont Park though he is on his work tab at Fair Hill.
Phyllis M. Wyeth’s Union Rags also worked on 3 June at Fair Hill in Maryland, and was reported to have come out in good order as well said Michael Matz speaking via telephone.
Union Rags worked on the Tapeta track at Fair Hill coupled with new rider, John Velazquez, who worked the colt five furlongs as he downed the distance in 59 seconds flat – which was recorded the sixth fastest at the same distance.
“He came out good, thank you,” Matz said Monday morning. “I think he worked pretty well yesterday. [Velazquez] liked him and we asked him [for a strong work], so hopefully we can come up [for the Belmont] and work out a trip.”
Out of Gone West mare Tempo, Union Rags downed his first three career starts, earning a hat-trick, which included victory in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special followed up by a dominating performance in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes over at a mile at Belmont Park.
Second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last fall at Churchill Downs, Union Rags started the 2012 campaign in winning fashion, landing the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes, third in the Grade 1 Florida Derby and finally seventh in the Kentucky Derby
on the first week of May.
Donegal Racing’s Dullahan on the other hand will be Union Rags’ main competitor in the Belmont Stakes, and both of them will look to down I’ll Have Another.
Dale Romans took Dullahan out after his pre-race breeze on Sunday.
“He mostly walked, jogged a little bit,” trainer Dale Romans said. “He was bouncing around, jumping around his stall, so I thought it’d be good for him to get out and do something.”
