Dullahan impressive in work among all Belmont Stakes workers on 3 June
The Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes field will be looking to stop the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, I’ll Have Another, from becoming the 12th horse to win the Triple Crown in the history of Thoroughbred racing, and for that I’ll Have Another’s adversaries are turning in the hard yards to come good on 9 June, 2012, at the Big Sandy.
Rain did interrupt workout sessions at the end of May and the start of June, but on 3 June, 2012, and blue skies and sunshine, as Dullahan among five Belmont Stakes contenders worked ahead of the “Test of the Champion.”
Comparing the five workers, Atigun was out on the track early morning to turn in four furlongs, as he breezed the distance in 48.55 seconds, and went on to cover two furlongs in 24.30 seconds, and concluded his work with a strong five furlong gallop in 1 minute and 1.63 seconds.
Bob Baffert trained, Paynter went a little farther than Atigun did, as the 3-year-old colt started off his work breezing seven furlongs in 1 minute and 25 seconds flat, went two furlongs in 24.66 seconds and four furlongs in 49.22 seconds, as he galloped out a mile in 1 minute and 38 flat.
The 3-year-old gray colt, Unstoppable U, the son of Exchange Rate worked five furlongs in 1 minute and 2.05 seconds, and two furlongs in 25.91 seconds, with a six furlong gallop in 1 minute and 14.55 seconds, as Street Life breezed five furlongs and galloped six furlongs in 1 minute and 1.15 seconds and 1 minute and 13.55 seconds, respectively.
Donegal Racing’s Dullahan was the impressive worker of all, as he started his work breezing four furlongs in 45.97 seconds, and galloping five furlongs in 58.91 seconds.
Trainer Dale Romans was impressed with his work, and said that the Even The Score colt is ready for the challenge.
“Right before the Blue Grass he went in (:57 2/5). When he works like that, he runs big," Romans said. "He looked like he was galloping, and then we got back to the barn he recovered quickly. He wasn’t blowing. I think he’s ready. I’m happy with my position. I wouldn’t change places with anybody in this race.”
