Dullahan takes Jamaica Stakes as prep race for the Breeders’ Cup
For someone who loves the poly track and the turf track, trainer Dale Romans is seriously considering running his start 3-year-old colt, Dullahan, in the Grade 1, $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on 3 November, 2012, at Santa Anita Park.
Though another strange decision was made when it was said that Dullahan might use the 1 1/8 mile Jamaica Stakes, a turf race, as a prep race leading up to the Breeders’ Cup Classic. It’s not your typical Breeders’ Cup Classic prep race, but it might end
up two entrants for the race, Dullahan and Cogito.
However, Dale Romans took the tension off the topic when he revealed that he is not going to decide early in which race Dullahan will race, as he further went on to say that the decision will be made when the touchdown in Southern California for the Breeders’
Cup World Championships, and how Dullahan trains there.
The Donegal Racing’s Dullahan has shown his liking of the mile and quarter over his career, especially when recently he kept the favoured, Game on Dude at bay to down the Grade 1 Pacific Classic.
The Pacific Classic was run over at Del Mar’s synthetic track, and if there is a need to look for a strong dirt run, Dullahan did come back strongly to post a strong third place finish in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs to winner, I’ll Have
Another.
Romans said, "Hopefully he'll continue to improve. We feel he's a better horse now than he was for the Derby. He's the first colt I've ever had to win three grade I stakes (Pacific Classic, Toyota Blue Grass, and Breeders' Futurity). After the Jamaica, we
can either shorten him up for the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT), stretch him out to a mile and a half in the Turf (gr. I), or run him at a mile and a quarter on the dirt. I'd like to get out there as early as possible, and I'll see if we have enough horses to
charter a plane, rather than go by Tex Sutton's schedule."
Dullahan might end up racing the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Mile over the Classic.
