  1. You can see the planets with a telescope.  But with small telescopes (around 4" diameter) they aren't much more than bright round dots of light.

But a larger telescope (say 8" or even larger) can show details of Mars, Jupiter (and its 4 large moons, but just as bright points of light), and you can clearly see Saturn's clouds, rings, and larger moons.

Telescopes come in all sizes and prices - you might check out astronomy.com or their printed magazine - they have information and on the more popular telescopes (as well as product reviews).

  2. Sure you can - I can see Saturns rings with mine - I only paid a couple of hundred for it.

  3. You can definitely see other planets with a telescope, and even binoculars.

I have just a small telescope and I can see Jupiter and the four larger moons.  I cab ever see the rings of Saturn.  Venus is pretty neat as it goes through phases like our moon.  Mercury and Mars are very clear as well.  Neptune and Uranus just appear as bright dots as they are very far away and my telescope is not all that big.

  4. yes!

  5. I took all these photographs using a regular web camera attached to a cheap ($50 used many years ago, but similar new ones now are about $400) 6 inch telescope. Judge for yourself.

  6. Sure you can, just depends on where you are. If you're on the surface of Earth chances are very slim. You have all that stuff in the way, such as the atmosphere. If you're orbiting Earth it's easier to view planets through a telescope.

  7. Yes you can see planets from Earth using telescopes and depending on the kind of telescope and more importantly what the temperature is. The cost will be between $180 at the cheapest up to a few thousand dollars at the most expensive.

  8. Scarlet, there are no dumb questions, only dumb answers!

Certainly, you can see the planets with a small telescope. Expect to spend at least $200 or £200 for a good one, but it will show you the moons and cloud belts of Jupiter, the moons and rings of Saturn, tons of detail on the Moon, and the phases of Venus. Mercury and Mars are very small, and usually disappoint.

Here are a few web pages with good information on beginner's telescopes:

For more advanced information, read Phil Harrington's Star Ware, 4th edition (Wiley).

You'll get the greatest value for your money with a Newtonian reflector on a Dobsonian mount, such as these:

Buy from a store which specializes in telescopes and astronomy, either locally or online; don't buy from department stores, discount stores or eBay as mostly what they sell is junk. Find your local astronomy club and try out different telescopes at one of their star parties:

  9. There are no such thing as a dumb question.Yes you can see them with a telescope but you can  only see so much they are far away.you can see some with the naked eye.there are web sites that tell you when to look.
