Question:

Dumb question re: Mucous Plug?

With my 1st pregnancy, my water broke spontaneously while I was still fully closed and not in labor. There was amniotic fluid gushing everywhere! I just realized that I had never lost my mucous plug. I mean, I'm sure somewhere along the way in labor it came out, but if I was closed and still had my plug, how did all the amniotic fluid get out?

  1. It's kind of like a water balloon filled too full......you can't prevent it from breaking!

The pressure from the water expelled the plug.  If you're wondering about your Mucous Plug with the second pregnancy.  It can vary in appearance anywhere from clear to brown or bright red blood tinged.  It's usually very noticable because you'll go to the bathroom and have to wipe off about 5 times to clear it!

I hope this helps and GOOD LUCK!

  2. I agree, the plug probably came out when your water broke.  With all the fluid coming out you probably didn't notice it.  I never knew my plug came out and I was just leaking.  When I laid down for the doctor to check me out then I gushed water all over the floor, I guessed I lost mine then.

  3. The plug probably came out with the water.

  4. Intraamniotic pressure is high so it pushes the plug and amniotic fluid finds its way out.

  5. It kind of melts out over the course of a few weeks.  It does not just pop out like a cork.  lol.  so, you may not have noticed it.  and the plug is not what holds things closed or whatever.  I think it is just there to stop bacteria and stuff from getting in during your pregnancy.  so, i never noticed mine either on either baby.  but you had to be dilated a tiny bit for your water to leak out like that.  probably like 1 cm.  and, yes, some mucus may have come out with the water break.  but usually you start losing your plug for a few weeks before you go into labor, and its not necessarily noticeable.
