Dumb stereotypes?

Okay, i got this a lot from many people and TV.

I think it's just dumb.

Some people makes fun of how "blondes" think.

I mean, my friend is blonde, and she's very brilliant y'know?

And much more stereotypes. I disagree with all those stereotyping y'know? Makes me sick.

Stereotypes ARE stupid and demeaning and FALSE. No one generalization can be applied to EVERYTHING and EVERYONE, you know? It pretty much defeats the purpose of being *individual* human beings.

Stereotypes are perpetuated because your mind actually ignores instances in which the stereotype is contradicted, as opposed to instances in which the stereotype is confirmed.

Let's use the stereotype of "blondes are dumb." Say you meet a blonde who is really smart. You won't think anything of it, but the minute you meet a dumb blonde, your brain goes "ding ding ding! she's dumb because she's a BLONDE!" and that's how stereotypes live on =( pretty sad, huh? this happens all the time though, it's embedded in human psychology. because we rely on *schemas* in order to relate to other people and situations.

Yes, we DO know! I agree!

Throughout history the "in" group has targeted an "out" group to discredit them through stereotyping them as dumb. It's frequently been done to ethinic or cultural groups. I'm old enough that I've actually heard some of the dumb blonde jokes told in previous decades but with the blonde replaced by an ethic or cultural group. The jokes just get recycled with a new target. Yeah, it says more about the person telling the story than it does about the supposedly dumb target.

well, that´s pretty normal. Most of us are surrounded by stereotypes. Personally, I think it´s a double sided situation. On the one hand, some people want to show   they´re better than others and create a stereotype (e.g the n**i Germany and the big-nosed and greedy Jew, the white-created  stereotype of  blacks)

On the other hand, many people, -especially  from ethnic minorities- embrace the stereotype and make it part of their culture and way of life - (Afro americans and the rap industry) because it makes them feel they ´ve got something "of their own". Most times it´s a fake - like the Scottish stereotype of bagpipes and teh Highlands.

Yeah, stereotypes are ridiculous.  I am from Eastern Kentucky, so trust me, I know a lot about being stereotyped.  But you know, what is probably the worst is that there are a lot of people in the stereotyped categories that lead other people to think that they are true.  Blondes who don't stand up for themselves when they are being made fun of or who purposely try to embody the "dumb blonde" are what causes people to continue to do this. Appalachian people who put on a big show for other people just because they know that other people think that's what we are really like are the ones who cause us to have a Hillbilly stereotype.  The most important thing, however, is that people who stereotype others are ignorant, because if they had any sense at all, they would obviously know that there is no trait that is true of everyone. They are the uneducated ones.
