Question:

Dumerils Boa vs Hogg Island?

I'm interested in getting a snake slightly larger than a ball python (which I already have). My first choice was the Hogg Island Boa (but a couple people have said they have nasty attitudes at times) My other choice is the Dumerils Boa. However one care sheet says they can be aggressive and many people say they become quite large. As my second constricting snake, which one would you recommend?

  1. I would say a dumeril boa. I have had a hogg island boa and 2 dumeril boas and the hogg island had a NASTY attitude. The dumeril boas I had were always calm, and I never had a problem with them.

  2. 3 words...

    Jungle Carpet Python

    :)

    have Fun!

  3. firstly.. every snake can be aggressive so always make sure you know what to do if one does get aggressive towards you!

but stick within your limits and try to handle them as much as possible and you shouldnt really have any problems.

personally i would go with dumeril. i have 4 myself and have never had a problem with any of them, there very lazy during the day but wake up at night time, all of mine love to be handled and love coming out, it can get seriously cramped when they all come out together!

size wize well 3 of mine are quite big (7 and 8.5ft) but the 4th hasnt got over 6ft even thou she's cared for the same way and is roughly the same age as the others. so ask around when you are looking to buy one find our how big the parents are and how big roughly they will get every snake is different,

the only thing i would say if you got one is to make sure there is no possibility of them escaping as all of mine have ganged up on me and broken out a few times and are generally quite good escape artists in temperment thou they are all great .

As for the hogg island boa i had a friend who had one but  you couldnt go near the viv he was quite aggressive! however she got another one and it was very placid from the word go so if you go for one of these make sure you can handle it if it does get aggressive!

just make sure you feel comfortable and have done your research before you buy anything! and when you do enjoy!

    hope this helps a little

  4. I just did a little research on both and if it was me, I'd go with the Dumerils because of the larger size(Though some websites are say 4-6 feet while others are saying 6-8ft, so I dunno) while most are saying 4-6 feet for Hogg Island. And in the little research I did, it seems that they are roughly equal temperament-wise but that the Hogg Island is more likely to be easily spooked throughout its life.

In the end, its up to you what you want, and as I said I only did a little research so I could give an opinion - You probably know much more about each and can therefor make a more educated decision.

    *EDIT*

How the person above me said Jungle Carpet Python - you should check those out if you haven't already looked at them - I just got one and its an amazing little snake, I definitely recommend it. Gets 5 to 8 feet long(Ask the breeder the parents' size). But if you're not interested in one, I'll still say Dumerils out of those two.
