Duminy looking to cement a long career in Test Cricket – Cricket News Update
South African lower-order batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JP-Duminy-c1742, is hopeful of cementing a permanent place in the Test side after the disappointments of the last couple of years.
Having made his ODI debut in 2004, it was not until 2008 that he got the chance to showcase his longer version prowess. Luck played some part though but when the opportunity came; he grabbed it with both hands.
An injury to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AG-Prince-c949 meant that Duminy played his first game against the daunting Australians at Perth but that did not deter him from showing his form and value to the team. A matured half-century ensured that his side was successful in overhauling their opponents' intimidating total of 414 before a stupendous 166 in the second Test at the MCG paved way for the team’s emphatic series win Down Under.
However, an inconsistent period followed, where the player averaged just 19.43 in the subsequent Tests, which forced the selectors to pick him for only the limited-overs format. Nonetheless, he forced his way back into contention with some exceptional performances in the domestic circuit before luck again helped him find a place on the team’s roster.
An eye injury to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 tour allowed Duminy a route back and the player impressed with his approach by batting at no.7. More often than not, he had the tail for support but the left-hander still managed 135 runs at an impressive average of 67.50, including 2 not outs.
"One thing I have learned batting at No.7 and with the tail is that bowlers tend to forget about you," he said. "With bowlers not worrying about you, you tend to get more lose deliveries. They are happy to get you off strike."
The player is further confident of performing the role on a long term basis. "You get let off by some bowlers but you can find yourself in difficult situations with the team 100 for 5, so there are two ways to look at it. I think I have grown in that role in the last three Tests and I want to start cementing a long career in Test cricket."
