Dummy Door k**b?

Question

I would like to put dummy door k***s on my french doors but whoever owned the doors before has huge holes for the handles. I would say it is about 2 1/2" in diameter. (Not at home to verify). The standard dummy door k**b does not fit since where I would s***w the k**b in is empty space from the hole. Is there a reason why the holes were made so big? And is this fixable or where can I find a handle that fits. The only other idea I can think of is to get those long and narrow plates to go over the hole. Any ideas?

If it was me I would get some brass plates cut to fit over the holes and then fix my k***s to that before fitting the plates. That would look really smart. Otherwise you can use aluminium or stainless steel. You can also cut a wood piece and router it or even cut a shape out of it and router it.
