  1. if you do not have a bamboo steamer & lid,  you can use

    * a wok with a steamer insert & cover

    * a plain large pot with some water in the bottom and a round or square rack made of wire,  the ones used to cool cookies & cakes .....to raise the rack to a proper height so you can put enough water in the bottom of the pot to steam your dumplings,  you can put anything that will fit under the rack but not break,  like a cake tin

  2. i put dumplings on top of my mother's head and get her angry by breaking her priceless vase ( how cliche ) within seconds, you have a nice cooked dinner. now if i could only know to cost effectively cool our house down because it's like a sauna in here with all the steam.

  3. Take a large pot that has a cover.  Put a bowl upside down in the bottom  (make sure the bowl is not plastic) fill the pan with water to full just below the top of bowl place dish (again not plastic) that is slightly smaller than the pot put the dumplings on the dish and bring to a boil to steam - you will need to check to make sure that the boiling water is not bubbling over the dish you might need to adjust the heat to keep the steam but not a roiling boil.

  4. I don't have a steamer, and this is what I do; it works great.  Take a big pot, fill with two inches of water.  Drop in a big colander/pasta strainer.  The top of the water should be a bit below the bottom of the colander.  Drop in the food, put lid on pot, and steam according to the directions.

    Hope this helps.

  5. Take a pie tin and punch holes in the bottom so the steam can penetrate.
