Dundee United manager facing pleasant striker dilemma
Dundee United manager Peter Houston says that he is facing a selection headache in the striking department ahead of his side’s home Scottish Premier League match against bottom-of-the-table St Mirren on Wednesday,
10 November.
The Arabs boss deployed second-string attackers Johnny Russell and Danny Cadamarteri from the start against Hamilton Academical on Saturday and, after the duo gave the Accies’ defence the runaround, he sent
on David Goodwillie and Jon Daly — who has been suffering from a hamstring complaint.
In-form Goodwillie then scored the only goal of the game in the 86th minute to help United take all three points back to Tannadice. It was the Scotland Under-21 international’s eighth goal in 10 games.
While Houston was pleased to pick up the win, he was encouraged by the effort put in by Russell and Cadamarteri. As a result, he faces a selection dilemma ahead of the visit of the Buddies.
'Strikers gave Accies a hard time'
He told reporters that: "I was happy with Johnny and Danny because they fitted into the system we played well. They gave Accies a hard time so it was nice to see that and then have Jon and David able to come
on and do their bit.
"It's really good to have those sort of options. Up front is an area we are strong in so I've got plenty of food for thought. The one thing I would say is we didn't look like scoring until Goodie came on.
“I was pleased with the work put in by Cads and Johnny. They worked Hamilton hard but it wasn't until Goodie came off the bench we looked a real threat in front of goal. I'm delighted with his form right
now but also know we can't rely on him all the time. But if we win 1-0 every week with a striker scoring I won't be complaining.”
