  1. Ignore the first answer - I'm not sure if it is being deliberately misleading.

Checking on www.thetrainline.com there are basically two routes, depending on whether you travel via London, or Cross Country. On the 9.59 departure, for example, change at Waverley, catch the 12.00 to Kings Cross, arr 16.46, then tube to Waterloo, catching the 17.50 to Salisbury, arrive 19.20. Alternatively, catch the 11.30, changing at Haymarket on to the 12.57 which takes you all the way to Basingstoke, arr. 19.09 where you can catch the 10.30 to Salisbury, arr 20.22.

There are other cross country trains where you change at Glasgow (Queen Street & Central) then Birmingham and Bristol. You have no need to go anywhere near Newport.

Check the site I quote for full details

Later to David f:- if you knew your geography, Newport is in the opposite direction to Salisbury. It sends the questioner over 20 miles west from Bristol, when they want to be travelling east! Whilst it is possible to travel that way, it may be off route, and certainly more expensive. If travelling cross country better by far to go via Birmingham (VT's 'hub' cross country station) and Bristol (if there is no suitable Scotland - Bournemouth train such at the 12.57 ex-Haymarket which I quoted before)

  2. I'm sure there is more than one answer to this question. Potentially there are a number of routeing options.  For instance you may prefer to avoid London. It might also be cheaper doing that. The suggestion from Richard B sounds fine to me - just check it on the journey planner (you can specify places you wish to go via). Check fares when you have generated the times.

P.S. Crewe-Salisbury via Newport 218 miles. Crewe-Salisbury via  Birmingham & Bristol 208. Not that disastrous. Actually I'd have thought the best way is Glasgow/Edinburgh to Basingstoke by through train and change there. Anyway - let the journey planner decide.

  3. Haymarket

    Crewe

    Newport
