Dundonnell set to appear in Jersey Stakes – Horseracing News
Dundonnell is set to take part in the Jersey Stakes at the Royal Ascot, where he might face rival Toronado. Both runners met in April this year, but the latter of the two proved too good in the end.
According to the former’s trainer Roger Charlton, “We're going to confirm an entry in the St James's Palace and have a look. It could pan out that there might be five or six runners, with the two obvious horses being Toronado and
Magician, but I wonder what else will run. The Jersey Stakes will have a lot of runners and he'll have a penalty in that.”
Looking at the progress of Dundonnell, he said, “I thought the way he ran over seven furlongs at Newmarket he looked like he wants a mile again. He's in good form, he's working well, but we're a kind of 25-1 chance, not 3-1.”
The three-year-old colt has got a very good record in the sport and he has been delivering some decent results in the ongoing season. This is why his camp is really confident right now.
However, things will not be easy against a quality runner like Toronado, who is considered to be one of the best in the business at the moment.
Last time when Charlton’s trainee battled against Richard Hannon’s challenger, the latter took control of the proceedings, winning the race by four lengths. He did not allow the runner up stallion to come anywhere near and lived
up to the expectations of everyone. He was rated as the favourite for that event and might once again win the best odds in the Jersey Stakes.
On the other hand, Dundonnell finished in third place back then, which shows that he needs a lot of hard work to deliver a winning run at the Royal Ascot. He was victorious in his most recent race, which shows that he is making
good progress, but the pressure will be completely different, when he will be up against some better stallions.
There will be some hope for the American runner because of the fact that Toronado lost rhythm in his previous outing, which saw him suffer the first ever defeat of his career.
