Dunedin as replacement for Christchurch – Rugby World Cup 2011 update
The second largest city of South Island of New Zealand, Dunedin, has been selected as a city to host matches as a replacement for Christchurch. The Rugby World Cup matches for the earthquake affected venue have been confirmed by the special committee for
this purpose.
So far, the clashes of England have that were supposed to be played in Christchurch’s AMI Stadium have been shifted. England will now be meeting Georgia and Argentina in Dunedin for the Word Cup clashes.
England will be playing Georgia on 18th of September and Argentina on 10th of September at Dunedin in stadium with a capacity of as many as 30,000 people.
Dunedin is already famous for its numerous stadiums and has been a host to several international sports events. Grounds like Logan Park, Dunedin Ice Stadium, Carisbook, Tonga Park and Caledonian Ground are the notable ones. It was earlier the largest city
of New Zealand until the Auckland council outmoded it for Auckland. It is famous for its windy weather and the sea. It is also an industrial city and has an international reputation for it.
The other matches that were supposed to be played in Christchurch are yet to be decided. Last month’s earthquake not only left New Zealand in shock of 166 deaths, but also had severe implications on the New Zealand Rugby Union. There were around 5 pool games
and 2 quarter finals that were to be played at AMI Stadium, Christchurch. Handling such situation with a burden of complete World Cup was a tough job, but the NZRU has so far managed it good.
For other matches, a few leaked reports signal that Scotland will be playing Argentina on 25th September in Wellington and Italy will front Wallabies on 11th September at the North Harbor Stadium, Auckland. Australia will be playing in another clash with
Russia on 1st of October oat Nelson. These new venues are reported to be confirmed, but an official statement from NZRU is still expected.
