  1. The most important things for D&D is your imagination. D&D was written deliberately as a very open-ended game - and further developments have started putting restrictions on what you are allowed to dream up. To get some basic ideas, find someone locally to you that plays, and ask to be invited. You may ultimately decide you don't like their particular philosophy, but you will get ideas from anyone who plays. I ended up being the DM dungeonmasterr) after my first few games, guess I'm a good storyteller, but I will tell you that my intentions as a DM are that the point is for the players to have a good time. Build a game that requires sense and care, but allows a reasonable chance for survival. It is role playing, usually oriented toward fantasy, where players assume the character of a fighter, or a mage, or a priest, or a thief, or a myriad of other possibilities, with basic characteristics of strength, intelligence, wisdom, constitution, dexterity, and charisma. and build from there. Have fun!

  2. As the poster before me has stated you need imagination and a close group of likeminded friends. The rule books can be purchased from a good book store, Amazon has a very good discount if you shop online.

As a Gamesmaster you will need at least the Dungeon Masters Guide and the Players Guide (Monster Manual is a great addition when you can afford it). It would be great if at least one other player has the Players Guide but ideally they would have one each.

Pencils, paper, access to a photocopier.

Mini figures can be bought at a variety of hobby stores but Wizards of the Coasts random blister packs are not an ideal way to get what you need for specific adventures, so i recommend shopping on ebay and purchasing exactly the mini's you need. Aletrnativly you can print out "standees" to represent the heroes and villains in the adventure.

Published adventures are a great way to start GM'ing. Theres a small adventure in the back of the Dungeon Masters Guide as well, perfect for a new player.

Check out the forums on D&D.com for hints and tips from other players and GM's and I wish you the best of luck. Im sure you'll have years of fun with D&D (I have)

  3. If by "D&D the board game" you mean the D&D Miniatures game (which is a purely combat-oriented game involving small plastic models), it's a good idea to begin with a Starter since it will have a rules booklet included. You can buy boosters to fill out your party or specialize it. If you are at a specialty shop they may have free posters showing every model available in a single expansion. On the reverse side is a map with a grid you can use for play.

If you want to play the D&D RPG, you'll need to look into which version you want to play. D&D 4th edition is the newest version and perhaps the easiest to learn (the rules for combat work a lot like the D&D Miniatures game). However, 4th edition has the fewest resource books so far, meaning you can't customize your character as much as you can with previous versions. Whichever you choose, it's probably a good idea to have a Player's Handbook from that version of D&D and a set of d20 dice, though not necessary (someone can probably lend you what you need).

As for where to go to play, you'll need to locate a group which is looking for players. Try community boards at specialty stores, posts in online communities, or see if your local high schools or colleges have RPG clubs.
