  1. My dad used to play when I was younger. He collected the miniatures (pewter) and painted them. He was real good at painting them, he even got different colors in the eyes so they looked real. I still have them around somewhere. The dice too. I used to like to play with them growing up.

I digress....what is your question though? What about them?

  2. Well, I'll guess you are wondering where they are and how to get  them?

Most good game and hobby shops carry the various polyhedral dice used for D&D.  For a typical game, you would want to start with 2 each of four sided, eight sided, ten sided, twelve sided and 20 sided, and at least 3 six siders.  You can get them in a variety of colors and styles.  For a big online selection, try www.chessex.com.

You don't need miniatures to play the game - you can use markers, or even just skip a board entirely and use your imagination. However, minis can be helpful.  Wizard of the Coast makes a line of official D&D miniatures; these are randomly packaged in 'boosters' of 8 miniatures.  They are plastic and prepainted, and good quality.  You can buy individual miniatures from the line at various online stores; most commons are quite cheap (10-20 cents each).  The D&D miniatures are also used for a skirmish miniatures game.

If you'd rather have minis to paint, you can look at miniature lines like Reaper (http://www.reapermini.com/) which has a great selection of metal minis.

If you are buying D&D stuff, be aware that D&D 4th Edition will be out in a few months, and most current books will not be compatible.  However, miniatures and dice should still be perfectly usable!
