Dunphy, Miranda and Kennedy prevail in Round 1 of Mr Price Pro Ballito – Surfing news
America’s Michael Dunphy, Brazil’s Bernardo Miranda and Australia’s Stu Kennedy advanced to the second round (Round of 48) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito after claiming top honours in their respective Round 1
(Round of 96) heats that went down at Ballito, South Africa, on Tuesday, July 2, 2013.
Brazil’s Miguel Pupo finished behind Dunphy during the fourth heat to secure his place in the next round as well, while Australia’s Ty Watson and his fellow countryperson Heath Joske got ejected from the contention for the event title after finishing in
third and fourth place respectively.
While Miranda emerged triumphant in the fifth heat, Hawaii’s Fredrick Patacchia finished in second place to accompany the winner into the next round. French Polynesia’s Alain Riou finished third, while Spain’s Gony Zubizarreta finished fourth, consequently
getting eliminated from the competition.
Basque Country’s Aritz Aranburu secured his place in the second round as well after finishing behind Kennedy in the sixth heat, while his compatriot Hodei Collazo and France’s Romain Cloitre finished in third and fourth place respectively, which resulted
in their removal from the contention for the event title.
A huge crowd was in attendance at the main event site to catch the surfing talent from around the world in action as they competed in four-man battles for the Round 2 spot.
The fourth heat saw Dunphy taking on Pupo, Watson and Joske in a battle for survival. The American surfer wasted absolutely no moment to get down to business. Locking his first wave in the opening minutes of the battle, Dunphy posted a 6.33 on the scoreboard
and soon backed it up with a 4.43-point ride, thus registering a decisive heat-total of 10.76 points.
Pupo clinched second place through a two-wave total of 9.93 points, thus extending his life in the event. Watson and Joske, however, found themselves removed from the contention for the event title after finishing with a heat-total of 8.60 and 8.23 points
respectively.
Miranda locked horns with Patacchia, Riou and Zubizarreta in the fifth heat for the Round 2 spot.
As the battle got underway, the Brazilian surfer collected a 7.17 and 4.77 off his top-two waves, thus registering a heat-total of 11.94 points. The score remained unbeatable until the end to see him off to victory.
Patacchia finished in second place with a heat-total of 11.63 points to extend his life in the competition, while Riou and Zubizarreta rounded out the bottom-two positions after registering a heat-total of 10.34 and 8.87 points respectively.
Kennedy paved his way to victory by earning a 5.17 off his first business-wave and backing it up with an impressive 9.07-point ride, thus finishing with a winning heat-total of 14.24 points.
Aranburu managed to survive the heat as well after finishing with a heat-total of 13.94 points. Collazo finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.52 points, while Cloitre had to settle for last position after registering a dismal two-wave total of 4.43
points.
