Question:

Dura Ace Bar End Shifter on a Tri Bike

The problem I have is that when I shift, it does not have the notched shifting action that I am accustomed to. It does not click at each gear. I would like to know if its a shifter that I have to replace or a rear derailer?

  1. Shifter, but it's a little more complicated.  First, unless your bar-end is really old, it should be capable of clicking.  Is there a tab that you can move?  If there is it should have at least two positions.  Move it and see if it starts clicking.  If you do have to replace the shifter be sure you get one for the same time period as your derailler.  Besides the obvious differences in number of gears, the geometry and cable throw length has changed on different occasions making some shifters and deraillers not work together.  This may actually be why yours is currently set up to friction instead of click.
