Duration of employment contract - Etisalat, UAE?

Question

Is it normal in the UAE that the duration of the contract ias Initially two years and unlimited thereafter (for a western expat)? Is the standard contract for Etisalat?

This is quite a common practice.  The company I work for has a 3 year definite term contract (duration) and then becomes indefinite (unlimited).  UAE labor law spells out very specific regulations for each type. For example, if you leave a definite term contract before the end date you, as the employee, will owe the employer up to 45 days salary.  

And yes, this is the standard Etisalat contract, I have quite a few friends working there.
