Durban to host the first European Tour tournament of the year: Volvo Golf Champions
The third version of the Volvo Golf Champions will be taking place on the fairways of Durban in 2013.
The Durban Country Club is located in the province of Zulu Natal. It is one of the major sporting events of the region as it attracts a number of sports personalities.
The line-up for the Volvo Golf Champions comprises of both young and old golfers, as the tournament kicks off on the 10th of January.
Matteo Manassero said that he will be participating in the tournament. The 19-year-old, Manassero has won three titles on the European tour.
Miguel Angel Jimenez will also be a part of the star studded field. Jimenez is a charismatic figure on the European Tour. His presence on the fairways always catches the limelight.
Recently, he won the Hong Kong Open and made golfing history by becoming the oldest golfer on tour to win a European Tour title. Jimenez accomplished the feat being a seasoned 48-year-old last month in Hong Kong.
Darren Clarke acknowledged his presence in the Volvo Golf Champions tournament. He is a champion of a major tournament and has experience on his side, as he is 44 years old.
Jeev Milkha Singh, who is the first Indian to win his European Tour card, will also be present amongst the ranks of the top players on the European Tour.
Usually it is said that golf involves physical and mental strength and is no place for old players. It is true that young players are dominating the golf tours these days but the presence of the veteran golfers is just as pivotal as the young players.
Jimenez recently justified this statement by winning the Hong Kong Open. He claimed his 19th title on the tour after his jubilant triumph.
Among all his victories, he won 12 titles since he turned 40.
When Manassero won the Singapore Open back in November, there was considerable speculation after that. It was said that golf is a young man’s game and is no place for old players.
Manassero, on the other hand, was making history of his own and, considering these facts, the speculation of the domination of young players on tour was rightly justified.
The Italian, Manassero won the Amateur Championship back in 2009 and became the youngest golfer to do so. He also has the privilege of being the youngest player in the history of golf to make the cut in a major tournament.

When the Italian was 17 years old, he became the youngest player on the European Tour to win a title. He won the Castello Masters and was named the Rookie of the year in 2010.
In the Singapore Open the Italian, Manassero beat the South African, Louis Oosthuizen to claim the title.
Volvo Golf Champions will kindle rivalries when the top golfers of the European Tour will come together to compete in Durban.
