Durbidge, Coleborn and Slater prevail in Round 1 of Vans US Open of Surfing – Surfing news
Australia’s Bede Durbidge, his fellow countryperson Mitchel Coleborn and America’s Kelly Slater made their way into the second round (Round of 48) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Vans US Open of Surfing after clinching victory in
their respective Round 1 (Round of 96) heats that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Monday, July 22, 2013.
France’s Vincent Duvignac, Basque Country’s Aritz Aranburu and America’s Nathan Yeomans made the Round 2 cut as well after finishing second in their Round 1 heats.
The fans of the sport expected a great deal from the fourth event on the 2013 ASP Prime calendar and they were surely no disappointed from the action that was delivered during the opening day of the competition.
Durbidge took on Duvignac, Brazil’s Peterson Crisanto and America’s Andrew Doheny in the 10th heat of Round 1.
The Australian surfer got off to a solid start and eventually converted it into a heat-total of 13.50 points, which proved sufficient to earn him the win.
Duvignac concluded the heat on a two-wave total of 12.14 points, thus securing second place, whereas Crisanto and Doheny registered a heat-total of 9.40 and 8.14 points respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The 11th heat saw Coleborn claim a convincing victory over Aranburu, Australia’s Chris Friend and America’s Cory Arrambide after finishing with a heat-total of 12.60 points.
Aranburu kept himself alive in the competition by clinching second place with a heat-total of 10.30 points, whereas Friend and Arrambide were forced to make a premature exit from the competition after registering a two-wave total of 9.33 and 8.54 points
respectively.
Slater, an 11-time ASP World Champion and two-time US Open of Surfing Champion, completely dominated the 12th heat, which had him pitted against Yeomans, Australia’s Heath Joske and Brazil’s Jean Da Silva.
The 41-year-old Florida-based surfer searched for the barrels and unloaded a series of back-hand tubes and powerful carves to post an 8.00 and an 8.67 on the score-board, thus finishing with an intimidating heat-total of 16.67 points. The score kept him
well out of his rivals’ reach until the end to earn him a comprehensive victory.
Yeomans accompanied Slater into the next round after finishing behind in second place with a heat-total of 11.80 points. Joske and Da Silva, however, were eliminated from the competition after registering a heat-total of 8.46 and 8.13 points respectively.
