Durham’s captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dale-Benkenstein-c1302, decided to bat first after winning the toss. The pitch was good for the batsmen, as it didn’t have any support for the bowlers. However, the overcast conditions suggested that there would be some swing for the seamers.
Wicketkeeper batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Phil-Mustard-c2183, was unable to make the most of the good batting conditions, as he was the first man to be dismissed in the visitors’ innings. He collected six runs off 15 balls in his short stay at the crease.
The first wicket’s fall didn’t cause many problems for the Durham team, as they were guided into a very strong position by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Di-Venuto-c1954 and Collingwood. The pair put together 142 runs for the second-wicket partnership, laying a very solid platform for
the lower-order.
Di Venuto got out after a fabulous half-century. He scored 70 runs off 71 balls with the help of seven boundaries. His team was in a strong position though, collecting 154 runs in 23.2 overs at that stage.

Benkenstein was not able to get going and was dismissed cheaply for just a couple of runs in his unimpressive outing.
