On Thursday, August 09, Surrey resumed their second innings from an overnight tally of 69 for five, aiming to overcome Durham’s huge first innings tally of 310.
It was always a tough call for Surrey, as they knew the game would either end in Durham's favour or on a draw.
On the other hand, Durham were not going to let this opportunity to win slip out of their hands.
Before overnight batsmen, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Robert-Hartman-Joseph-c85857 Burns and TE Linley could get the partnership running, the worst happened when Durham dismissed Linley on nill, with just 69 runs on the board.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Burns-c48842 was then joined by MNW Spriegel, and the two batsmen spearheaded a potentially intimidating partnership.
However, Durham were unmatchable as with 91 on the board, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/G-Onions-c1449 grabbed the prized wicket of Burns, who fell after scoring a knock of 39 off 130 deliveries.
With the departure of the opener, Surrey knew their hopes of drawing the game had been blown away, but still refusing to go down without a fight, Spriegel and skipper GJ Batty forged a daunting stand.
The two batsmen launched a blatant attack on the bowlers, smacking them all around the park.
They carried the side to a total of 114 runs, before CD Thorp decided Durham had had enough as he broke the partnership by grabbing the wicket of Spriegel. The batsman was caught by Stokes after jabbing a knock of 17 runs.
It was then time for J Lewis to join his skipper, and the duo exhibited strength by taking the score to 138, before Lewis departed after hitting ten runs off his bat. The batsman was caught by Collingwood off the bowling of Borthwick.
Batty and Dernbach forged a last ditch effort to avoid an imminent defeat, but could muster only 143 runs, ending the innings on the demise of Batty, who fell after scoring 22 runs.
