During Testing in SAT?

Do I have to answer every single question? Because the first time I did it, I had 5 min. left to answer 8 questions every section. So I started guessing. But then after my friends said you dont need to answer all of them. Is this true?

  1. Yes, it is!

If you answer and get it wrong, you get 1/4 point off (i think)

but if you omit, you don't gain or lose.

  2. If you don't answer a question they don't count the question meaning they don't mark it as wrong; they just don't count it. I just don't suggest doing that for more than five or six questions.

  3. Yes it is true. It's better to omit (skip) than guess randomly. You get deducted points for getting wrong answers. This is how the scoring system works. For every right answer you get in a section you get a point. For every wrong answer you get deducted one quarter of a point (0.25). For omitted/skipped answers, you don't get deducted. At the end, they add up your raw score which is all the answers you got right minus one fourth of the answers you got wrong. This is your raw score. They have a scale and based on this scale, you get your score.

    For example:

Let's say you're calculating your math score.

In all the sections, you got 40 questions right. You get 8 wrong and you skip 10. You start with the 40 points you have from right answers. Take one quarter of your wrong answers which is 2. The 10 questions you skipped don't count toward anything. Therefore, your raw score is 38. They look at their chart and you get your score.

Let's say you guessed on those 10 questions instead of skipping them. You take the 40 points and subtract 4.5 because 4.5 is one fourth of 18 which is what you got wrong. Your raw score would be 35.5 which is rounded to 36. Those two points alone could've cost you around 100-200 points on the real test.

Skipping answers is one of the best weapons you can have on your side. I suggest buying an SAT prep book from your local bookstore and read through it and do the practice questions. It'll offer you a lot of new strategies and will help you a lot for the real test.

  4. If you don't have enough time guess because if you get the wrong answer you will lose points and if you guess you have a chance of getting a point. EVERY QUESTION COUNTS!

  5. On the SAT, don't rush through and guess if time starts to run out.  You're NOT penalized for not answering questions.
