It really depends on the situation. Different circumstances call for different adjustments to your technique.

Sometimes I will move my body forward while throwing the lead hook, which is most useful for covering distance (obviously).

Sometimes I'll angle off to the side while throwing the hook to counter a jab (though, I have more success with this when I throw a jab in return).

Again, it all depends on the circumstance. As long as you've got the proper mechanics behind the punch, you're doing it right. Minor adjustments are a good thing, if they suit the situation. It's our ability to adapt that separate us from the animals.

keep your hands up and cover your face don't keep them by your body. to protect from body shots you use your elbows and you slip down. you can always take a step or chose to stay where you are before you punch. sometimes you will need to step out of the line of fire in order to deliver a punch and then not get hit.

if your opponent is charging at you, it is best to throw the left hook while side-stepping them as it will knock your opponent off balance and allows you to follow up with your Punch's, but if your just facing off to your opponent its best to use it in a combination so that your opponent does not see it coming

Your question does not state if this is for someone giving the left hook or receiving the left hook so I will answer both. With 15 years experience in boxing and one who's best punch is a left hook. If I am throwing a left hook I try and lock my elbow into my side and twist at hips while. As I torque my hips I twist my left foot on the ball of my left foot. The key for power is the torque and trying to keep the elbow locked as close to your body as possible.
