During an oil change, do I need to fill the filter before installing, on my 1997 Explorer?

Heavens no!

The oil pump fills it in about a half a second.  

It takes about 2 full minutes without oil pressure to score bearings.  

Don't sweat the small stuff.

No.  But you need to rub some oil around the filter gasket.  Make sure your hands are clean.

I do it. A filter can hold a half quart of oil. But don't think it is necessary to do so.

no, once you start your car, and let it run for a minute, it will fill up and then you need to shut it off let it sit for a minute and then check levels again to make sure youre not a half quart low.

it does help if you can just about fill it ,it makes the engine build up oil pressure a lot faster,i always fill mine with as much as i can get in them,it sure don't hurt one to do it this way,good luck.

no you don't have to but it's easier on the engine on the initial start-up after the oil change if you do.

I would suggest it. It worth it to take the extra 3 seconds and do it right don't listen to these shade tree mechanic. Think about it you are gonna start your engine with no oil.  I don't think it will hurt your engine to no put oil in the filter but it only takes like 2 seconds to do it so might as well.

This is always best. When the engine starts it will pump the oil through out the engine faster. Thy say that the first few minuets of start-up is the worst. I have always filled the filter before starting.

ive always added fluid to the filter and rubbed a little around the gasket so obviously it cant hurt
